Section J Reports for commercial buildings in Australia

Section J Reports for commercial buildings in Australia

What is a Section J Report?

Section J Reports highlight the energy efficiency requirements for commercial building types in Classes 3, 5, 7, 8 and 9 of the National Construction Code (NCC).
It also includes some types of residential developments not covered under Class 1, 2 or 4, such as boarding houses, guest houses, hostels, lodging houses, commercial, retail, apartments and backpacker accommodation, and can also include the residential area of schools and hotels.

Section J covers the requirements for small commercial builds throughout Australia.

The Section J Report assesses various sustainability criteria including:

The building envelope (roof, floor, exterior doors, windows and exterior walls):

  • Building sealing, including windows, doors, chimneys, flues, exhaust fans;
  • Air-conditioning and ventilation systems;
  • Lighting and power; and
  • Hot water supply, swimming pool and spa.

Why do I need a Section J?

Section J is requested when it has been chosen as the most appropriate method to assess the compliance of a proposed development, usually small commercial builds. It is often required by Council in order to proceed with a Development Application.

Our experience will ensure that the details in the report meet requirements.

What are the benefits of a quality Section J Report?

Having someone who is experienced in the Section J assessment process ensures that the details in the report will meet Section J and Council requirements appropriately. That is, the specifications within the report will be correct – not understating or overstating what is required.

What Floyd Energy® needs to get started

To begin a Section J Assessment, a basic set of plans including site plan, floor plan, elevations, sections, electrical plan (including lighting), and a window schedule/sizes is required. The National Construction Code now also requires wall and roof construction details with framing member sizes and spacing to assess thermal bridging.

If you are unsure what to provide us with, please contact us for further information.

When should I contact you for a Section J Report?

It is best to contact us early in the Town Planning process or prior to the Building Permit process. This enables us to work together and make any adjustments required before plans are finalised.

Who can conduct a Section J Report?

Section J Reports are specialised energy rating reports and should be conducted by an appropriately qualified and experienced assessor. Floyd Energy® has experts in building thermal simulation and have extensive technical and building knowledge.
